Costa Calida Resorts - Lo Pagan and Los

Located in the Murcia region of south-eastern Spain, the Costa Calida (Warm Coast), consists of about 250 kilometres of beautiful Mediterranean coast. Starting in the north at El Mojon, it stretches all the way to Aguilas in the south.

One of the unique features of the Costa Calida is the huge saltwater lagoon known as the Mar Menor (Lesser Sea), with an area of 170 km2 the Mar Menor has a depth no greater than 7 metres and its warm waters are dotted with some of the finest coastal resorts in the region. Two of the most popular of these are Lo Pagan and Los Alcazares.

Lo Pagan, located at the northern end of the Costa Calida, is famous for its healing mud baths, which can be found in a part of the salt lake known as ‘La Puntica’. Visitors from all over the world flock to Lo Pagan to enjoy these free mud baths and to bathe in the therapeutic salt waters. The mud a Lo Pagan has high levels of beneficial minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulphur, chlorine and fluoride, and applying it to the skin and joints can have beneficial effects for many ailments, such as abscesses, ulcers, sores, acne and other skin complaints. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect on disorders such as arthritis, gout and rheumatism. Bathers can be seen along the seafront at Lo Pagan covered in the smelly, black mud, drying in the sun. Lo Pagan can be easily accessed from the N332 coast road at San Pedro del Pinatar.

A little further south from Lo Pagan, you will find the beautiful seaside resort of Los Alcazares, one of the best loved locations on the Costa Calida. Los Alcazares, located between San Javier and Cartagena, is lapped by the calm waters of the Mar Menor and has some lovely beaches for visitors to enjoy. The history of Los Alcazares begins with the Arab occupation of Spain, and it was the Arabs who built Spas along this coast, to utilize the healing powers of the salt water and they established Los Alcazares as a place of rest and recuperation.

The Arabs also put in place irrigation systems, promoting Los Alcazares into an important agricultural area. Present day Los Alcazares, is a busy tourist resort, attracting both Spanish and foreign visitors who all enjoy the fine beaches, amenities and water sports facilities, in a relaxed peaceful atmosphere.

If you are visiting Spain in the near future, be sure to stop off at the Costa Calida resorts of Lo Pagan and Los Alcazares.
